Illustration work

Hand-drawn illustrations capture nature, exploring river systems and wetland habitat formations in the aerial perspective of a wetland floodplain. The textures of planting draws the eye to the mosaic of edge conditions, reedbeds, scrubs woodlands and their potential in flood mitigation measures, for resilient ecological designs.

As feasibility-stage river and floodplain visuals, these conceptual vignettes help design and ecology teams communicate the spatial character and habitat potential of floodplain restoration to clients, stakeholders and planning audiences.

The conceptual storyboard illustrations trace the shift from a constrained river corridor to a restored floodplain habitat, showing changes in flow and planting structure.

Process:

The process of the digital illustrations that are created at Studio Lilaya follow a similar process to traditional watercolours. I create illustrations that are artistic impression of your design intent

1. Composition

This is where we form the building blocks of the illustration composition. Discussions regarding the composition and the design intent are useful at this stage as we progress into materiality.

2. Base washes

The colour and value studies follow, where we aim to capture the lighting and the main colours. This gives an opportunity for reviewed and adjustments, before the final colour washes are completed.

3. Final washes and details

The colours that follow are final layers of digital watercolour. It builds on the previous discussions and allows me to develop the textures, details and shadows, bringing the scene to life.
